‘Five-0’ slips to No. 2 in ratings

In a tight ratings race Monday night, the debut of Kathy Bates on NBC edged the "Hawaii Five-0" debut of Reiko Aylesworth as Chin Ho Kelly’s ex-fiancee.

"Harry’s Law" drew 11.04 million viewers while CBS television’s "Five-0" drew 10.62 million, according to Nielsen figures released yesterday by CBS. ABC aired a rerun of "Castle," the only show that has challenged "Five-0" this season, and drew 5.67 million viewers.

Aylesworth guest-starred as Dr. Malia Weston, in an awkward reunion with her one-time fiance, played by Daniel Dae Kim.

Net language logo made in Hawaii

A new version of the computer programming language HTML was rolled out yesterday with a logo and online badge designed by Hawaii-based marketing firm Ocupop.

The company was hired by the World Wide Web Consortium to craft the logo for HTML5, which will be licensed under Creative Commons.

The design was initially inspired by the five points of a star, but designer Michael Nieling said the concept evolved into a keystone, given its architectural importance in arches, bridges and other structures.

HTML is the dominant computer programming language used for Web pages.

Queen’s Medical book due out

A book tracing the Queen’s Medical Center’s beginnings and its evolution over 150 years will be available at Barnes & Noble Booksellers, Borders Books & Music and other outlets beginning Monday, the hospital said yesterday.

The 175-page book, written by Jason Y. Kimura, is priced at $39.95.

Verizon Wireless sets Maui job fairs

Verizon Wireless is hosting two job fairs on Maui this month to hire retail and customer service employees. The first will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. tomorrow at Maui Community College, and the second will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday at the Maui Beach Hotel.

Delta nets $19M but fares might soar

MINNEAPOLIS » Delta and other major airlines are paying more for jet fuel, which means travelers will soon pay more to fly.

When it reported a fourth-quarter profit of $19 million yesterday, Delta said its fuel bill could rise by $1 billion this year, if oil prices stay where they are at about $92 a barrel. Delta’s fuel bill rose 13 percent to $1.93 billion in the fourth quarter.

Delta and other airlines already have raised fares as jet fuel prices have climbed, and Delta said it could dial back its growth plans as well, if necessary.

Travelers will notice the fare increases first. Delta and United raised fares on Monday, with other airlines matching at least some of the increase, said Rick Seaney, CEO of FareCompare.com. By his count it’s the fourth increase since December. He said the increases appeared to be $10 to $20 round trip, depending on the airline.

Delta’s fourth-quarter profit was its first in a decade for that time of year. Delta lost $25 million a year earlier. Revenue rose 14 percent to $7.79 billion.

Moses has 10 years of experience in development, including as director of alumni relations at ‘Iolani School, director of development at Mid-Pacific Institute and director of 49er Athletic Association at Long Beach State in California.

Makena Beach & Golf Resort has announced Timothy E. Murphy as the new director of golf at the Makena Golf Course. He will be responsible for the overall golf operations, including program and service standards development, overall golf maintenance and development and execution of the facility’s budget. Murphy has been general manager at Koolau Golf Club, head golf professional for the Waikoloa Beach & Golf Resort at Waikoloa and director of golf at the Kaanapali Golf Resort.

RIM Architects has hired Luke Lopaka Williams as a designer and cultural architect. He previously operated LJW Designs, a firm specializing in culturally responsive design.
