Hawaii stuns Stanford in men’s volleyball
Jonas Umlfauft hits what is known as a ‘heavy ball.’ Last night, the sophomore opposite carried an even heavier load, that of Hawaii’s 0-3 record, the worst start in the program’s history.
Umlauft put down 22 kills, over half of the Warriors’ total, as No. 13 Hawaii stunned the defending NCAA champions 25-22, 25-21, 25-17 at the Stan Sheriff Center. It took 105 minutes for the Warriors (1-3, 1-0 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) to end a seven-match losing skid against the previously undefeated Cardinal (3-1, 2-1), dating back to 2008.
The sweep also snapped Hawaii’s five-match losing streak in conference openers.
‘Iolani product Brad Lawson, one of seven isle graduates on the Stanford roster, led the Cardinal with 13 kills.
