About 30 people evacuated from the Kamakee Vista apartments in Kakaako early this morning after a trash fire spread smoke throughout the 28-story building, a fire department spokesman said.

A smoke alarm at 2:54 a.m. alerted residents and firefighters to the fire. 

Firefighters discovered a smoldering rubbish bin on the ground floor. An automatic sprinkler system put the fire out, said Capt. Robert Main. But smoke had spread throughout the building through the trash chute, he said.

Firefighters spent about two hours ventilating the building, Main said.
