19.3M viewers follow gridiron to beach beauties on ‘Five-0’
Proving football on a frozen field goes well with sunny images of Waikiki Beach, a special Sunday broadcast of "Hawaii Five-0" drew a whopping 19.3 million viewers when CBS aired a new episode after the NFL’s AFC championship game, according to Nielsen ratings released yesterday by the network.
The episode, which featured both Grace Park and Scott Caan dressed in demographic-grabbing beachwear, attracted 5.6 percent of adults 18-49 who watch TV.
The show has averaged 13.25 million viewers a week during its normal, 9 p.m. Monday time slot.
The episode with a tsunami plot line began with Kono in a bikini as she gave surfing lessons to a bare-chested Danno.
Sunday’s show was the first of six "Hawaii Five-0" episodes airing over the next 16 days. Episodes will also air at 9 p.m. Friday, Monday and Feb. 6 and 7 on KGMB. The Feb. 7 episode will be new.
Airing so many episodes in a short period — new or not — is a sign of the show’s strength, said Walea Constantinau, commissioner of the Honolulu Film Office. "You don’t get that kind of repeat play unless there is value to the show," she said. "It shows a lot of pride and confidence in the show."
