Firefighters work to extinguish hard-to-reach blaze off Likelike Highway
Honolulu firefighters are using their helicopter to extinguish a smoldering fire that was reported this morning above the Burmeister overpass on the Honolulu side of the Likelike Highway.
Smoke from the fire was reported by several people just after 8 a.m.
Capt. Terry Seeling, Honolulu Fire Department spokesman, said the fire is “very deep into the valley” on the Ewa side of the Likelike highway between the Burmeister overpass and the Wilson tunnel and not threatening any private property.
He estimated that it was about a half mile away from the road.
The fire department is using a playground at Kalihi Elementary School as a staging area for its helicopter to pickup water.
