Farrington earns OIA White title

This time, the Farrington Governors were all business and no drama.

Jeffrey Madarang scored 16 points, J.P. Saycon had 13 and Viane Vaina added 12 as No. 4 Farrington overpowered McKinley 51-35 last night to capture the Oahu Interscholastic Association White Conference championship.

It was a relatively easy game for the Governors compared to their three previous matchups with the Tigers. The teams split their regular-season series, and Farrington (21-4 overall) edged McKinley 49-48 last week in the playoffs. McKinley needed two wins over Farrington in the double-elimination format to claim the OIA crown.

"We played smarter. We played together," Govs coach Allan Silva said of his team’s tantrum and technical-foul free performance.

Defensive stopper Ryan Reyes, who made a game-saving block in the last win over McKinley, is out of the season with an ankle injury. The Govs didn’t seem to miss a beat, shooting 52 percent from the field (22-for-42).

"When somebody’s out, somebody else steps up," Silva said. "These guys stepped up."

Madarang was especially hot, raining three second-quarter 3-pointers over McKinley’s persistent 2-3 matchup zone.

"I was feeling it," the guard said. "I felt it in warmups, shooting outside. I just wanted to keep shooting."

Rio Kwon led the Tigers with 11 points and Alex Ironside added 10. The Tigers shot 23 percent from the field (10-for-44), including 4-for-23 from 3-point range.

Farrington dominated the boards, 35-20, thanks in part to Vaina, who had 12 rebounds.

A crowd of about 700 at McKinley Student Council Gym saw the home team dash to an 11-2 lead behind the aggressive play of Ironside, who made six free throws in the first 2 minutes of the game.

However, the Govs switched to a 2-3 matchup zone and rarely permitted an open look from the arc by McKinley. Madarang drilled two 3-pointers and came up with a steal, feeding Saycon for a behind-the-back layup on the break as Farrington went on an 18-0 run.

Madarang’s trey from the corner gave the Govs a 25-17 halftime lead. McKinley got within five after Kwon opened the second half with a 3-pointer, but Farrington countered with a 16-8 run. Saycon’s 3-pointer bounced in and the Govs led 41-28 early in the fourth quarter.

McKinley (19-10 overall) got no closer than 10 the rest of the way.

Both teams had already clinched berths in the eight-team Division II state tournament which opens Thursday. Seedings and pairings will be announced Sunday.
