The state Department of Land and Natural Resources shut down Hapuna State Recreation area in Kona today after a county lifeguard spotted an object suspected of being unexploded ordnance.

The cylindrical object was spotted in waters of about 4 to 5 feet deep at the south end of Hapuna Beach. It is between 4 and 6 inches in diameter and 8 inches of it protruded above the sand.

Lifeguards put up yellow caution tape along the beach between the state park and the Prince Hotel side of the beach.

DLNR sent an officer to the scene. The agency also notified the U.S. Army’s Unexploded Ordnance office on Oahu, which will investigate.
