Several public meetings are scheduled for next week on Oahu to explain an increase in retirement compensation for federal workers in Hawaii, Alaska and U.S. territories.

U.S. Sen. Daniel Akaka announced the meetings Tuesday, saying federal workers outside the mainland United States have received far less retirement pay for too long.

The hearings, hosted by the Office of Personnel Management, will explain how a new law will include locality pay in retirement calculations.

Previously, workers in Hawaii, Alaska and U.S. territories received a cost of living allowance that wasn’t figured into their retirement benefits.

Akaka’s office said the discrepancy was changed when the Non-Foreign Area Retirement Act was signed into law in 2009.

The meetings are accessible in person or by conference call.
