Kauai residents can now drop off many types of household batteries for recycling under a program operated by Kauai County.

People may take batteries to the Kauai Resource Center at 3460 Ahukini Road near Lihue Airport. The center is open weekdays from 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

People drop off A, AA, AAA, C and D dry cell batteries, lithium batteries (such as camera and cellphone batteries) and NiCad batteries. Batteries must be separated by type and placed in the appropriate drums inside the center’s main building.

Commercially generated batteries are not eligible for the household battery recycling program.

Used car batteries and uninterruptible power supply (UPS) backup batteries may be taken to the Lihue PS&D Tires/NAPA Auto Parts store for recycling.

For more information on battery recycling, go to www.kauai.gov/batteryrecycling or call the County Recycling Office at 241-4841.
