The news off the field was much better than what happened on it for the Hawaii Rainbows.

No. 13 Cal State Fullerton swept a doubleheader against Hawaii, beating the Rainbows by identical 4-2 scores to take the first three games of the series.

Kolten Wong’s streak of 142 consecutive games played came to an end as a shoulder injury kept him out of the doubleheader. Wong hadn’t missed a start in his entire UH career until suffering the injury in Friday’s 3-0 loss.

The Rainbows were also without junior Jesse Moore, who had his shoulder pop out on the on-deck circle.

Hawaii coach Mike Trapasso said neither Wong nor Moore will play in the infield for the forseeable future, but both may contribute as soon as today.

"Kolten’s injury is less serious than we thought, but he may be able to hit (today)," Trapasso said. "Jesse is OK to pitch and will pitch Wednesday against Wichita State, but they’re both out of the infield for a little while and that’s a tough thing."

Without both starters, the Rainbows (11-12) hung tough with the Titans (15-8), who have won seven of their last eight games.

Hawaii brought the tying runner to the plate in the last inning of both games, but couldn’t break through.

"You’ve got to be able to push them across and find a way (to win)," Trapasso said. "We’re no stranger to close games, but we’ve just got to get over the hump. Our guys competed, but we weren’t able to scratch enough runs across."

Fullerton was three outs away from the first perfect game in school history in the opener.

Junior Tyler Pill retired the first 18 batters he faced in a game scheduled for seven innings.

Breland Almadova broke it up after advancing to first on a wild pitch following a strikeout to lead off. The no-hit bid was erased when Pi’ikea Kitamura doubled to center, scoring Almadova from first.

Michael Blake hit a two-out RBI double to bring the tying run to the plate, but Pill struck out Zack Swasey to end the game.

Pill finished with 11 strikeouts and no walks to improve to 3-0 for the season.

"It was one of my top performances, granted we only had to go seven innings and not the usual nine," Pill said. "As the game progressed, I realized they weren’t hitting the ball very well off of me and I just tried to stay with the plan I had out there."

Hawaii took its first lead of the series in the nightcap, scoring twice in the first. Five straight batters reached base with two outs, beginning with a Jeff Van Doornum double. Blake followed with an RBI single and Swasey singled to put men on first and second.

Titans starter Dylan Floro labored through the inning, walking Garrett Champion with the bases loaded to give UH a 2-0 lead. He struck out AJ Bayus to end the inning, but threw 45 pitches.

Floro (3-2) didn’t allow another run over the next five innings and left in the seventh after Fullerton built a 3-2 lead.

"The way (Floro) settled down and stayed within himself was the difference in this ballgame," Titans coach Dave Serrano said. "I’m very proud of the way he overcame adversity and finished the six innings for us."

The four-game series wraps up today with a single game at 1:05 p.m. Zach Gallagher (3-0, 1.62) will start for UH.
