Two players set to sign with UH men’s basketball team
Versatile junior college standout Hauns Brereton has joined athletic high school swingman Dillon Biggs as players on the cusp of signing national letters of intent to play for the Hawaii men’s basketball team next season.
Brereton, a 6-foot-7, 210-pound forward at Western Nebraska Community College, averaged about 20 points and seven rebounds per game for WNCC, including a torrid stretch over the team’s last 17 games, when he averaged around 27 points.
Brereton, who has two years of eligibility remaining, took a visit to UH last month during the Rainbow Warriors’ CIT game against San Francisco. He feels he could be a missing piece in boosting the program to the next level.
He shot 39 percent on 3-pointers and is said to have a sound post-up game.
He chose UH over two other primary contenders: BYU and Tulane, both of which he visited. Recruits can sign national letters of intent today, though WNCC coach Russell Beck expected the form would arrive tomorrow morning.
"I prayed about it and I felt good about it," Brereton said of his decision. "After seeing my options I sat down and wrote the pros and cons, and I saw the pros in Hawaii and I just loved it."

Brereton has a tie to Hawaii — his great uncle is local entertainer Al Harrington, and has numerous relatives in the islands on his mom’s side of the family.
Dorsey (Calif.) High coach Kevin Gibson said Biggs, a small forward who averaged about 17 points and seven rebounds in his senior season, plans to follow through on his previous oral commitment and sign his letter with UH today.
UH currently has three scholarships to offer for the 2011-12 season.
