UH’s Apine earns WAC track honor

Hawaii’s Madara Apine was named the Verizon Western Athletic Conference women’s outdoor track and field athlete of the week yesterday.

Apine, a junior from Latvia, set a UH record in the triple jump with a mark of 41 feet, 8.5 inches at the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational last week.

Vulcans golf team finishes 13th

Hawaii-Hilo golfer Travis Russell carded an even-par 72 yesterday to lead the Vulcans in the final round of the Hanny Stanislaus Invitational in Turlock, Calif.

The Vulcans finished tied for 13th in the 20-team tournament with a three-round total of 50-over 914. Russell was part of a five-player tie for 19th place in the individual standings at 6-over 222.

Hawaii-Hilo women 18th in Texas

The Hawaii-Hilo women’s golf team finished 18th at the Doc Housewright Invitational in Granbury, Texas.

Nyssa Aoki was the Vulcans’ top scorer with an 81 yesterday and a two-round total of 164, placing her in a tie for 45th.

Dixie State tops UHH in baseball

Dixie State held off a Hawaii-Hilo rally in a 7-4 win in the first game of yesterday’s Pacific West Conference baseball doubleheader at Wong Stadium.

Dixie State starter James Mahler struck out eight over 6 1/3 innings and Eric Bond’s two-run double in the third gave the Red Storm the lead for good.

The Vulcans’ Ronnie Loeffler gave up five runs on six hits and struck out five in four innings in taking the loss.

Colts quarterback Peyton Manning has a new job, but it doesn’t involve throwing footballs — at least not yet.

Manning and wife, Ashley, are the parents of twins. Birth certificates filed April 8 show Mosley Thompson Manning and brother Marshall Williams Manning were born March 31.
