Arson suspected in Kalihi Valley house fire

A three-story wooden home in Kalihi Uka was badly damaged by a fire late this afternoon in what may have been a case of arson.

Firefighters were called to the two-alarm fire at 1561 Kilohana St., near Kalihi Uka Elementary School, at 4:17 p.m., Honolulu fire Capt. Terry Seelig said. They arrived to find all three stories of the home in flames.

It’s unclear how many people live in the home, and there was no immediate damage estimate.

Fire and police investigators are still looking into the cause of the fire, Seelig said.

However, “we were told that neighbors had spotted a person who was acting strangely along the base of the house,” he said. “When they went to question him, he ran away, they pursued and detained him until police arrived.”

Fire and police officials will be interviewing him, Seelig said. “And we’ll be looking into other possible causes as well.”

No other structures were damaged and there were on injuries.
