50-foot fall injures hiker in Maunawili

A 23-year-old female hiker who fell 50 feet from a trail in Mau­na­wili yesterday possibly fractured her neck, ribs and wrist and suffered “multiple scrapes and bruises,” Hono­lulu Fire Capt. Earle Kealoha said.

The woman was conscious and alert when a fellow hiker reached her, Kea­loha said.

The Fire Department’s Air 1 helicopter retrieved the woman at 1:07 p.m. and flew her to Mau­na­wili Neighborhood Park, Kea­loha said.

Paramedics took the woman to a hospital in serious condition, according to the city’s Department of Emergency Services.

5 become lost during Koolau hike

Honolulu firefighters planned to resume their search today at daybreak for five hikers who became lost last night above the Pali Highway’s hairpin turn in Windward Oahu.

The hikers were reported missing at 5:50 p.m., and search-and-rescue crews had to suspend their search just after 7 last night because of darkness and cloud cover, Hono­lulu Fire Capt. Earle Kea­loha said.

The hikers had been in communication with firefighters, but their cellphones were losing power last night, he said.

They were hiking west and told firefighters at one point that they could see Pali Highway’s hairpin turn.

Pool cue used in assault on patron

The female owner of a downtown bar was arrested on suspicion of assault Saturday night after she dealt with an unruly customer by allegedly hitting him on the head with a pool cue, police said.

The 44-year-old man allegedly kicked the 59-year-old bar owner in the leg after she asked him to leave at about 9:30 p.m., police said.

The woman then hit the man in the head with a pool cue, causing a gash, police said.

Police arrested the woman for investigation of second- degree assault. Police also opened a third-degree assault investigation on the man but did not arrest him.

Baby dies after natural childbirth

A baby died from complications of natural childbirth in a Salt Lake home Saturday morning while under the care of a naturopathic physician, police said.

The baby had complications after birth, and paramedics were called at about 11:15 a.m., police said.

The baby and mother were taken to a hospital, where the baby was pronounced dead.

Stolen items found in man’s backpack

A 29-year-old man was arrested Saturday in the burglary of two Waikiki apartments beneath his girlfriend’s apartment after police discovered stolen items in a backpack, police said.

The man was seen coming out of one man’s apartment at 1:30 a.m. Saturday, police said. Another neighbor who came home at 9:15 a.m. also discovered that items were missing, police said.

Officers found the suspect at his girlfriend’s apartment upstairs, and police received permission to search a backpack near the suspect, police said. Items from both victims were found inside the backpack, police said.
