A 58-year-old Kauai woman escaped injury today when fire caused extensive damage to the upper floor of a two-story home on Kamole Road in Kealia.

Kauai County said that according to a preliminary report, the resident detected heavy smoke and flames coming from the upstairs and immediately evacuated the house.

Firefighters got the alarm at 11:19 a.m. When they arrived at 11:33 a.m., the upstairs bedroom was fully engulfed in flames.

Firefighters from Engine 2, Engine 8 and Rescue 3 had the fire under control within 15 minutes.

The downstairs of the home was not burned, but may have sustained extensive water damage.

The cause of the fire was being investigated.
