Suspect, 32, sought in shooting

Police are looking for a 32-year-old man who fired a gun toward a 25-year-old man Friday in Olomana near Kailua.

The shooting took place at the end of Ulupuni Road in a gated agricultural area, said neighbors familiar with the incident. The land is owned by HRT Ltd., a part of the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, and leased to the Makalii Valley Farmers Association, according to property tax records.

Neighbors said they have complained to police for years about chicken fighting and other criminal activity on the grounds.

One neighbor who heard the shots said he heard three to four pops in quick succession.

Police said the shooting happened after a boy told his father there was a man with a gun parked down their driveway about 3:30 p.m.

When the father confronted the other man, the two argued, and the gunman pointed the handgun toward the other man, then fired "a shot past his head," police said.

The shooter fled before police arrived.

Police said they have a possible name of the gunman.

Swimmer goes missing near islets

Honolulu Fire Department rescue personnel suspended their search for a missing swimmer in the area of the Mokulua Islands.

The swimmer, believed to be a man in his 20s, was apparently swept off an outcropping of rocks yesterday and was unable to get back to shore.

According to HFD spokesman Capt. Robert Main, HFD personnel initiated a search at 6:16 p.m. but were forced to suspend it at about 7:35 p.m. due to darkness. Rescuers will return to the scene this morning to resume the search.

Man walking on highway hit by car

Maui police are investigating a pedestrian accident early yesterday morning on the Hana Highway in Kahului.

Police said a 1999 Honda Accord driven by a 32-year-old Pukalani man struck a 27-year-old Wailuku man walking on the Hana Highway near Hansen Road at 12:49 a.m.

Both the Honda and the pedestrian were headed north on the highway.

Police said the victim was taken to the Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition. The driver of the Honda was uninjured.

Investigators are looking into whether speed, drugs and alcohol were involved in the crash.
