Big Island police are investigating the theft of a trailer loaded with $40,000 worth of glass paneling in Ookala.

The black PJ Gooseneck flatdeck trailer had an Oregon license plate with the number H584726 and was valued at $18,000.

Police said the flatbed was taken from the mauka side of Hawaii Belt Road between the 32- and 33-mile markers between Tuesday and Wednesday. A witness later reported seeing a brown older-model Ford pickup with its hood up next to the trailer about 7:35 p.m. Tuesday.

Officers found the glass load dumped and shattered along the makai side of Hawaii Belt Road between the 33- and 34-mile markers.

Police urge anyone with information about the case to call Officer Christopher Ragasa at 962-2120 or the police department non-emergency line at 935-3311.

Anonymous tips can be made by calling Crime Stoppers at (808) 961-8300 in Hilo or (808) 329-8181 in Kona.
