The Hawaii Book Publishers Association is honoring a University of Hawaii Press book on Hawaii birds with its Award of Excellence in Natural Science.

The group recognized “A Photographic Guide to the Birds of Hawaii: The Main Islands and Offshore Waters,” by bird photographer Jim Denny.

“Hawaiian Birds of the Sea: Na Manu Kai,” by conservation biologist Robert Shallenberger received honorable mention in the same category. Shallenberger is currently the Hawaii Island conservation director for the Nature Conservancy and vice president of the Hawaii Wildlife Center.

The university said Friday UH Press Director William Hamilton received the association’s John Dominis Holt Award for Excellence in Publishing.
