Firefighters rescue hikers off volcano trail

Correction:  Big Island firefighters rescued a woman, 32, and a man ,28, from a forest near Kilauea volcano’s Pu’u ‘O’o vent. An earlier version of this story incorrectly said firefighters rescued 60 people.

Two hikers got disoriented Monday while hiking in the heavily-forested area of the Big Island’s Kahahaualea Natural Area Reserve in the area of Kilauea volcano’s Puu Oo vent and had to be rescued by firefighters.

The hikers,  a man, 28  and a woman, 32,, wandered off the trail to the Puu Oo vent when they contacted Big Island firefighters by cell phone at 4:40 p.m.. When they were able to make contact with firefighters by cell phone they were more than a half mile southeast of the trail.

Using the fire department’s helicopter, a rescue party was inserted and cut a path to the lost hikers who walked out. There were no injuries.
