Big Island bus will cost $1 for one-way trip

As of next month it will cost most Big Island riders $1 for a one-way trip on the Hele-On bus.

Hawaii Tribune-Herald reported Thursday a Hawaii County Council vote ends more than six years of free island-wide transportation.

Bus fares are to be waived for children younger than 5, students, the disabled and those older than 55.

The Council voted Wednesday to reverse its earlier rejection of Mayor Billy Kenoi’s fee proposal.

Kenoi still needs to sign the bill or allow it to take effect without his signature for the fare to become law.

Tom Brown of the Mass Transit Agency says the fares are expected to raise $560,000.

Riders can get a discount by buying a book of 10 tickets for $7.50 or an unlimited monthly pass for $30.
