Firefighters extinguish Hawaii Kai brush fire
Honolulu firefighters contained a 2-acre brush fire at the Alan Davis beach below the Makapuu hiking trail parking lot.
The fire broke out at about 6:15 a.m., said Capt. Terry Seelig, a spokesman for the fire department. It was under control at about 7:15 a.m., but firefighters expected to be on scene for a couple more hours putting out hot spots, Seelig said.
The fire is in an area near an old fishpond and is not near any hydrants or roads, Seelig said. Firefighters had to hike in and bring their own portable water units to put out the blaze, he said.
Crews were staging from the Makapuu hiking trail parking lot and a dirt access road.
Seelig said Kalanianaole Highway remained open as firefighters worked on the fire.
