Coast Guard rescues fishermen west of Kiribati

A Honolulu-based Coast Guard aircrew rescued three fishermen on Thursday who had been missing for three days.

The men, ages 17, 19 and 27, were found 100 miles west of Tarawa, Kiribati.

The Coast Guard Joint Rescue Coordination Center launched the aircrew from Barbers Point on Oahu on Wednesday in response to a request by the Republic of Kiribati government. The search began on Thursday, 1 p.m. HST.

The Coast Guard released information that the missing men were last seen on a 17-foot blue and white wooden skiff. This information helped a South Korean fishing vessel identify the skiff, which was found at Thursday, 5 p.m. HST.

The rescue coordination center in Honolulu diverted the aircrew to the scene, where the men were rescued. They were found in good condition.
