Suspect charged in deadly shooting spree
Prosecutors charged Toby Stangel with 15 felony counts in connection with Friday's shooting spree. He is being held on $5 million bail.
Toby Stangel, 28, of Wahiawa, was charged Saturday night with 15 felony counts, including murder and attempted murder, in connection with Friday’s deadly shooting spree, the Honolulu Prosecutor’s Office said.
Stangel’s bail is set at $5 million.
The charges are:
>> three counts of attempted murder in the first degree — two for each of the police officers he fired at and one for all the civilians he fired at, the office said in an email
>> one count of murder in the second degree in the shooting death of Tammy Nguyen.
>> four counts of attempted murder in the second degree.

>> five counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony.
>> one count of a firearms charge.
>> one count of possession of a prohibited detachable magazine.
Hawaii law allows 10 rounds in a clip; the magazine Stangel had in his gun was capable of holding 15 rounds, the Prosecutor’s Office said.
He will make an initial appearance in District Court on Monday and his preliminary hearing is scheduled for Wednesday.
The charges stem from a 17-minute shooting spree that stretched from Kaimuki to Aiea and left a 54-year-old mother of 10 dead and two others hospitalized. Five others were shot at but not injured.
According to police, the shootings appear to be random and none of the victims were known to the suspect.
Nguyen, 54, of Palolo was shot to death in her van at the intersection of Kapiolani and Kapahulu Avenues while her 16-year-old daughter sat beside her.
Kalihi resident Amie Lou Asuncion, 24, and 38-year-old Samson Naupoto of Salt Lake are recovering from gunshot wounds sustained during Stangel’s alleged spree.
Stangel’s mother and father issued a statement today: "We are broken and sick with grief. Our hearts and prayers go out to the innocent families who have been affected by this tragic act. We wish we had an explanation, but there simply is none. Those who know us, know we have always loved our son with an unconditional love. We thank all of you who have sent us your love, prayers & support. We are looking to the Lord Jesus for guidance, strength & comfort."
Mike Stangel, Toby’s father, is the pastor of North Shore Christian Fellowship, which has about 400 members.
