State to hold meeting on plans for protecting Kaena State Park

State officials plan to meet the North Shore Neighborhood Board on Oahu to discuss plans for preserving and protecting Kaena Point State Park.

The state Department of Land and Natural Resources and its Kaena Point Advisory Group are due to present five recommendations at a special meeting of the board scheduled for Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Haleiwa.

The department says the recommendations are designed to protect the area from further damage by off-road vehicles. Use of the vehicles at the park has damaged sand dunes and led to severe erosion.

The department formed the advisory group in 2009 to work with the public in creating an action plan. The group aims to find a balance between various interests and user groups and to advise the department on management solutions.
