Weakened trees prompt closure of Maui’s Baldwin Park

The Maui County Department of Parks and Recreation will close Baldwin Park Wednesday as a precaution because of tree hazards.

Park officials have identified two trees on the right side of the park, a coconut and an ironwood, as having had their base weakened by beach erosion. Both trees have roots exposed and are in danger of falling and injuring beachgoers.

The same beach erosion has damaged park facilities and earlier this week forced the closure of the Baldwin Park restrooms and shower area.

Baldwin Park will be reopened as soon possible, after the situation can be resolved and public safety restored, the county said.
