A Coast Guard helicopter cruises the shoreline around Chinaman's Hat.

Two Schofield Barracks soldiers died and another soldier was injured this afternoon after they were caught in a current while walking in the water between Mokolii Island and Kualoa Regional Park, firefighters said.

A group of four soldiers ran into trouble while walking back to shore from Mokolii Island, also known as Chinaman’s Hat, said Honolulu fire Capt. Terry Seelig.

Lifeguards found a 26-year-old man’s body on shore, Seelig said. Paramedics took a second man, 27, to the hospital in critical condition, and he later died.

A 29-year-old woman was taken to the hospital in serious condition. A third man, 26, was found on shore, apparently uninjured.

Police said the incident was reported at 1:21 p.m. Initial dispatch reports said the four were caught in the rising tide as they walked back toward the park. Low tide was reported to be at noon with high tide peaking at 4 p.m.
