PAGO PAGO, American Samoa >> An American Samoa elementary school teacher has pleaded not guilty to charges he raped a 13-year-old girl.

Tone Pulou was arraigned in High Court in Pago Pago on Friday. A pre-trial conference hearing has been scheduled for Dec. 21.

He has been charged with first degree sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child.

According to court documents, the girl told police she had sex with Pulou starting around September 2009. The girl became pregnant.

Pulou was arrested in Honolulu last month and extradited to Pago Pago shortly afterward. He had been wanted by American Samoa authorities since August 2010 when he allegedly fled the territory for Australia.
