Toxicology results showed the 18-year-old woman who died when the SUV she was driving crashed last week did not have either alcohol or drugs in her system, the city Department of Medical Examiner said Friday.
Coroners said Tayler Nanea Pangan-Fergerstrom, a Kapiolani Community College student who lived with her grandparents in Kuliouou, died directly as a result of injuries she sustained in the one-vehicle crash on Kilauea Avenue the night of Oct. 27. Three others in the 2000 Chevy Tracker were injured in the crash, two critically.
Police said Pangan-Fergerstrom, a 2011 graduate of Kamehameha Schools, was driving the SUV that crashed into a metal railing fronting Kaimuki Middle School.
While witnesses said they saw beer containers at the scene, Pangan-Fergerstrom’s family insisted that the teenager did not normally drink.
Neighbors in the area said accidents happen in the area frequently, noting that Kilauea is on a steep slope. Some noted that accidents may have increased after a traffic signal was placed at Kilauea and 18th Avenue in recent years.
