Kauai officer fatally shoots man who killed 1, attacked 3 others
Kauai police fatally shot a Waimea man Friday after he allegedly used a large knife to attack four people, one of whom died from stab wounds.
About 11 a.m., police said the 21-year-old suspect attacked his 83-year-old grandfather on Menehune Road. The suspect then stabbed a 68-year-old female neighbor who died from her wounds.
Police said the suspect then walked a short distance and attacked a couple, a 63-year-old man and 50-year-old woman, outside their home.
A responding police officer attempted to stop the suspect. He ignored the officer’s commands and continued with the attack when the officer shot the suspect, police said. The suspect attempted to flee on foot but collapsed. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The three wounded victims were transported to Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital for treatment. Their conditions are not known at this time but their injuries do not appear to be life-threatening, police said.
The investigation is ongoing.
