Viloria scores TKO victory over Segura in the Philippines

Brian Viloria successfully defended the WBO flyweight title with an eighth-round TKO victory over Mexico’s Giovani Segura on Sunday morning at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City, Manila, Philippines.

Referee Samuel Viruet stopped the fight 29 seconds into the eighth round after Viloria landed a left hook that sent Segura stumbling.

Segura had a softball-sized lump on the right side of his head after taking thunderous left hooks to the temple for the entire fight.

Viloria improved to 30-3 with 17 knockouts, handing Segura (28-2-1, 24 KOs), ranked No. 9 on Ring Magazine’s pound-for-pound list, his first career loss by knockout.

The Star-Advertiser had Viloria ahead 70-63 heading into the final round.

Viloria suffered a cut over his left eye early in the fight.
