Honolulu police traffic investigators were at the scene of a motor vehicle accident which closed Young Street between Palm Drive and Piikoi Street. Investigators said a man dropping off his pet at a business on Young Street pulled out of his parking stall in his car and collided with a man in his 80s traveling west on Young Street on his moped. The moped operator was in critical condition and unresponsive at the scene.

A mo-ped rider who died following a crash in lower Makiki Monday has been identified.

Police said Robert Ahlstrom, 80, of Honolulu, died of cranial cerebral injuries from the motor vehicle accident on Young Street between Palm Drive and Piikoi Street about 10 a.m.

Police said a Toyota, driven by a 55-year-old Honolulu man, was moving out of a curbside parking space when it struck the mo-ped driver. The mo-ped driver, who was ejected, was not wearing a helmet, police said.

Ahlstrom was taken to a hospital in critical condition. He died later Monday.

Police closed Young Street for more than two hours while investigators examined the scene.

Speed and alcohol are not believed to have been factors.
