A 17-year-old Kihei boy died today after a vehicle hit him as he was crossing a highway in south central Maui.

Maui police identified the boy as Zachariah Aubut.

Police said the vehicle was traveling south-bound on the inner lane of Mokulele Highway when the driver hit Aubut, who was walking or running across the road. Aubut died at the scene.

The crash happened at 12:53 p.m., about a half-mile north of Kealia Pond National Wildlife Refuge. Speed and drugs do not appear to be factors.
