Kauai police discover body in stolen SUV

Kauai police discovered a dead body in a stolen vehicle Thursday afternoon, a county spokeswoman said.

The chain of events began at about 2 a.m. Thursday when an 82-year-old man reported that a man broke into his Hanalei home. The elderly man told officers  that the suspect held him at gunpoint and took off with an undisclosed amount of cash and his Suzuki SUV.

Police later located the stolen SUV in Princeville and discovered the body of a man they believe to be the robbery suspect in the vehicle.

“This case is currently under investigation, and as such we are unable to release additional details at this time,” Kaua’i Police Chief Darryl Perry said. “However, at this point, there is no reason to believe, nor is there any evidence to support, the possibility of a homicide; I want to reassure the residents of Princeville and the general public that you and your ‘ohana are safe.”

The dead man’s identity is being withheld pending a positive identification and notification of next of kin.
