A 75-year-old woman is back home safely after spending Saturday night lost in the La Perouse area of southern Maui.

The woman was hiking with a group on Saturday when she became separated  around 2 p.m. Rescue personnel were called around 8 p.m. and a decision was made to begin a search at first light.

At 5:45 a.m. today, the Maui Fire Department began an extensive land and air search for the missing hiker. She was located just before 8 am. and transported via helicopter to a nearby parking area where her husband was waiting.

Rescue officials said the woman was in “good shape” following the ordeal.
