Kauai County lifeguards revived a 61-year-old hiker after he suffered an apparent heart attack on the Kalalau Trail.

At 9 a.m. Thursday, the male hiker had just started his hike when he became distressed and called 911, the county said in a news release

Three lifeguards from the Kee Beach tower responded and reached the hiker just past the trail head.

Soon after they escorted him back to the start of the trail, the man went into cardiac arrest.

Lifeguards revived the hiker after they administered CPR and used a portable defibrillator.

The 61-year-old man regained consciousness and was described to be in fair condition, according to the Kauai Fire Department. Paramedics transported him to Wilcox Hospital for treatment.
