Off-duty police sergeant arrested after his car hits pedestrian

A veteran Honolulu Police Department sergeant was arrested early today after he allegedly struck a pedestrian with his car.

According to police, 57-year-old Andrew Tsukano was traveling west on South Beretania Street, about 500 feet east of Victoria Street, when his car struck a man crossing the roadway. The pedestrian was taken in serious condition to a hospital.

Tsukano refused to submit to a sobriety test and was arrested on suspicion of operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant; refusing to submit to a breath, blood or urine test; and felony negligent injury. He was released pending investigation.

Tsukano was not on duty at the time, police said.
