The Hawaii men’s basketball team suffered one of the most lopsided losses in program history today, an 115-73 decision vs. New Mexico State at the Pan American Center in Las Cruces, N.M.

The 42-point margin of defeat tied for the second-worst Western Athletic Conference loss for UH (15-12, 6-5 WAC).

A 21-point UH halftime deficit was trimmed to 14 to start the second half by the Rainbow Warriors, but the Aggies reasserted control quickly and poured it on late. Freshman Daniel Mullings had 28 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists, marking the second straight game UH allowed a rare triple-double.

The Rainbows were blown out for the second time on their three-game road trip heading into Saturday’s contest at Louisiana Tech (14-14, 3-7).

Fourth-place UH remained winless in Las Cruces in seven meetings with the second-place Aggies (21-8, 8-3), who won for the seventh time in eight games.

UH was led by forward Joston Thomas, who scored 13 points. Forward Trevor Wiseman added 12 and guard Shaquille Stokes 10 off the bench.

But the team’s top two scorers, Vander Joaquim and Zane Johnson, were held to a combined 15 points on 4-for-14 shooting.

The last time UH allowed 100 points was on Feb. 20, 2010, a 102-89 home loss to Cal Poly. It was the first such defeat under Gib Arnold. The 115 points allowed was the most by UH since a 126-84 loss at TCU on Feb. 12, 1998.

The Aggies dominated the final 10 minutes of the first half after UH got to within 20-18.

NMSU shot 59.4 percent to 41.4 percent for UH in the period, ending the half on a 12-2 run for a 52-31 lead at intermission.
