The 46-year-old man who died after jumping into the Ala Wai Canal was identified by the Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office as Herbert T. Shiloh of Honolulu.

The cause of his death has been deferred, pending further tests and results could take six to eight weeks, the office said.

A witness saw the man jump into the canal Sunday afternoon and he failed to resurface, police said.

The witness and other bystanders pulled the man out of the water near Namahana Street and called 911 at 3:18 p.m. Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Capt. Gary Lum said bystanders performed CPR on the man. Paramedics took him to the hospital in extremely critical condition.
