Bullet shatters window of van with family inside

Police arrested two men in Puna Tuesday in connection with a gunshot that shattered the window of a van occupied by six family members.

At about 1:34 p.m., patrol officers responded to a gunshot fired in the Hawaiian Acres subdivision. A van occupied by two adults and four children was traveling on Road 10 when they heard a shot that shattered the van’s passenger side window, according to Lt. Greg Esteban of the Hawaii County Police Department.

There were no injuries.

"They’re real fortunate in this one. It could’ve turned out way bad," said Esteban.

The victims and two suspects, a 68-year-old Hilo man and 47-year-old man of the Hawaiian Acres subdivision, are not known to each other.

Esteban said the two suspects are acquaintances. The type of firearm used is under investigation.

Police arrested the Hilo man on suspicion of first-degree reckless endangerment. The 47-year-old man also was arrested for the same offense and released last night pending further investigation.
