No tsunami threat to Hawaii from strong quake in South Pacific
A strong earthquake off Papua New Guinea in the South Pacific did not generate a Pacific-wide tsunami, officials said today.
The magnitude 6.7 quake struck at 8:15 a.m. Thursday near the epicenter (12:15 p.m. today in Hawaii) and was centered about 39 miles east-southeast of Goroka, New Guinea, at a depth of about 69 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Ewa Beach said there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii.
