Hawaii Marines transforming squadron to fly Ospreys
The Marine Corps in Hawaii is officially transforming its Sea Stallion helicopter squadron into an Osprey aircraft squadron.
The shift will take place during a change of command ceremony at Kaneohe Bay on Thursday.
The $70 million Osprey is the military’s latest-generation transport aircraft.
It combines airplane-like wings with rotors that allow it to take off and land like a helicopter. Its engines roll forward in flight allowing it to fly faster than a standard helicopter.
Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 363 will wrap its battle colors a final time as Lt. Col. Mark Revor is relieved as the squadron’s commanding officer. The squadron flew CH-53D aircraft.
Lt. Col. Timothy Miller, will then assume command and unfurl the unit’s new battle colors to officially activate Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 363.
