Reality TV inspires baby names locally, nationally
Reality TV is giving birth to some of the most popular baby names. No, not Snooki. But Mason, as in Kourtney Kardashian’s son, jumped 10 spots to become the second most popular name for newborn boys in 2011.
The more traditional Sophia is the new top name for girls, while Jacob is No. 1 for boys for the 13th straight year, according to the list released today by the Social Security Administration.
In Hawaii, Mason also came in No. 2 in boys’ names in 2011 while biblical names, Noah and Elijah, were No. 1 and No. 3, respectively, but Hawaiian names were popular as well with Kai (Ocean) at No. 12, according to the state Department of Health.
The most popular Hawaiian name for a baby girl was Malia (Mary) at 13th.
Sophia, Olivia and Emma ranked at the top in popular picks respectively, the department said.
