Driver beaten after hitting bikers on California freeway

BELMONT, Calif. >> The California Highway Patrol says a driver was beaten by motorcycle riders after he veered into them while trying to video them on a Northern California freeway.

The San Francisco Chronicle says it happened just after 8 a.m. Sunday on U.S. 101 near Belmont.

CHP Officer Art Montiel says a 19-year-old man from San Jose was using his cell phone to record a group of bikers when his Prius veered into another lane, overcorrected and crossed back into the fast lane.

Montiel says the Prius struck a motorcycle, bounced off the dividing wall and took down a second bike before stopping.

Witnesses reported seeing motorcyclists beating the driver. He and two bikers were treated at hospitals for minor injuries.

Montiel says the driver will be cited for distracted driving.
