Portions of Kalapaki Beach in Lihue have been reopened, officials said Tuesday, after water-quality tests found the areas safe following last week’s major sewage spill.

The state Department of Health approved allowing people to use the eastern end of the beach, from the rocks in the middle of Kalapaki Beach to the cliffs where the homes are, and the surfing area along the jetty known as "Ammonia’s" on the western side of the bay.

The area between the rocks in the middle of Kalapaki Beach and "Pine Trees" in front of Anchor Cove Shopping Center, including Kalapaki Stream, remains closed until further notice.

A power failure at the Lihue Wastewater Treatment Plant last Wednesday caused an estimated 400,000 to 500,000 gallons of partially treated sewage to enter a storm drain that leads to Kalapaki Bay.
