Spain’s Rafel Nadal beat world No. 1 Novak Djokovic 6-4, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 today to win the rain-delayed French Open tennis championship a record seventh time, breaking a tie with Bjorn Borg for the most titles won in the clay court major.

Djokovic led 2-1 in the fourth set when play resumed in the early afternoon in Paris, France, under cloudy skies. He was quickly broken in the fourth game and then double-faulted on match point in the 12th game to seal the championship for Nadal, who went into the crowd after the match to hug his father and other members of his family.

Djokovic was trying to become the first men’s tennis player since Rod Laver in the late 1960s to hold all four major titles at the same time. The Serb beat Nadal in the final of the three previous majors — including a marathon match at this year’s Australian Open. Laver and Don Budge are the only men to have won a Grand Slam title in men’s tennis. Laver did it twice.
