Kailua-Kona man charged with assaulting woman in Captain Cook

Hawaii County police today arrested a 43-year-old Kailua-Kona man, wanted for assault and other offenses stemming from a Feb. 4 assault at the Kealakekua Ranch Center in Captain Cook.

Robert Kanuela Tanoai, also known as “Boomer,” turned himself in at the Kona police station at 7:10 a.m. today, and was charged with unlawful imprisonment, terroristic threatening and two counts of assault. Tanoai was being held at the Kona cellblock in lieu of $100,000 bail. His initial court appearance is scheduled for Wednesday.

Police asked for the public’s help June 8 in finding Tanoai.

Police said a 30-year-old Kapaau woman had allegedly been assaulted by an acquaintance, and was taken to the Kona Community Hospital, where she was treated for injuries to her face and body. Police said the woman had been held against her will, threatened and assaulted.
