Maui forest reserves reopen after four days of wildfires

The Makawao Forest Reserve will be reopened today after a four-day-long forest fire that burned 10 acres was extinguished, state officials said.

The state Department of Land and Natural Resources .reopened the Kula Forest Reserve, Waipoli Road and Polipoli Spring State Park Wednesday after the forest reserve access road was cleared of fallen trees.

Trails in the Kula Forest Reserve and Polipoli State Park will remain closed until further notice due to safety concerns with fallen trees and debris. DLNR will reopen trails one at a time as soon as each one is cleared.

DLNR Chairman William Aila reminds the public to practice fire safety, including extinguishing cigarettes, using camp stoves properly and avoid making ground fires.
