The University of Hawaii football team has received an oral commitment from a prolific high school quarterback from Modesto, Calif.

Aaron Zwahlen of Thomas Downey High made his pledge on Sunday night. Zwaheln, who will be a senior in the fall, will put his commitment in writing on Feb. 6, 2013, the first day prep recruits may sign national letters of intent.

"Hawaii felt like home," said Zwahlen, who took a family trip to Honolulu during his school’s spring break.

Brigham Young, Texas Tech, Washington State, Duke and Northwestern were recruiting Zwahlen. This past weekend, Zwahlen was named the most valuable senior quarterback at BYU’s camp.

Earlier this month, he competed at the Oakland Elite 11 combine.

Zwahlen is 6 feet 3 and 195 pounds. As a junior, he passed for nearly 3,000 yards and 29 touchdowns.

Downey ran an air-raid passing attack.

Zwahlen also competed in track. His best time was 22.4 seconds in the 200-meter dash.

During his family trip to Hawaii in April, his father,  Dr. Lynn Zwahlen, was reunited with UH head coach Norm Chow.

Chow coached Dr. Zwahlen for three years at BYU — as a graduate assistant in 1973 and receivers coach in 1976 and 1977. Dr. Zwahlen went on a church mission in 1974 and 1975.
