Tachibana pleads not guilty to drunk driving

University of Hawaii football player Alema Tachibana is suspended from team-related activities until the resolution of his drunken-driving case. 

Through his attorney R. Patrick McPherson, Tachibana entered a not guilty plea in District Court this morning. Tachibana was not in court. 

Police arrested Tachibana, 21, a reserve linebacker, in Kalihi on June 18. He was released after posting $500 bail. 

His trial is scheduled for Oct. 15. 

McPherson said he would not comment on specifics until after receiving the prosecutor’s report.

Head coach Norm Chow suspended Tachibana effective this morning.

Tachibana has been participating with the rest of the team in a school-administered conditioning program through July 31. UH’s training camp begins on Aug. 1, with the first practice on Aug. 2.
