An early morning accident this morning knocked a utility pole down on 10th Avenue and Kiwila Street in Palolo. About 2,300 customers lost power.

Hawaiian Electric Co. crews restored power to 2,300 customers after a car hit a utility pole in Palolo early this morning, a HECO spokesman said.

The accident happened on Kiwila Street near 10th Avenue about 3:45 a.m., closing the street for several hours when crews replaced the downed utility pole.

Police said the driver of the vehicle fled the scene. However, police have a license plate number which they are investigating.

Darren Pai, a spokesman for Hawaiian Electric Co., said crews were able to restore power to all but about 500 customers by about 6 a.m. Power was restored to all customers by 7:20 a.m.

No serious injuries were reported in the accident.
